Recently, a new variation on liposuction has appeared that is called Ultrasound-assisted Liposculpture, or "UAL" for short. The metal probe used in UAL procedures has the ability to produce high frequency, ultrasonic sounds. The sound emitted by the UAL device liquifies the fat and it is then removed through suction as normal.
By using UAL, a surgeon can remove larger amounts of fat since the device does not produce as much tissue damage or bleeding as the traditional device. UAL also has the advantage of leaving less bruising on the patient. UAL has another advantage over traditional liposuction in that it is much less likely that there will be irregularities in the contour of the treated area.
The UAL may not work for you, however, since the probe can only be used in certain areas of the body. Check with your surgeon to see if this applies to you. This technique may also be significantly more expensive, since the equipment used is quite costly. There are reports of the first two generations of UAL equipment sometimes damaging skin with sound waves that were too powerful. This problem has apparently been resolved on third and later generation machines.
